For starters, my thoughts:
Very complex interplay of factors: the role of Christianity in medieval life, and how it evolved and diversified; an array of the different factors that led to its evolution and diversification; the growing role of the political element, as political entities grew in reach and power, especially as governing authorities co-opted local and regional religions and their leadership for political purposes; the dynamic role of demographics in all of that; religious and political trends; and the power imbued in individuals such as kings and queens that could drive their personal agendas to shape both politics and religion.
