Child & Youth Formation
In support of families attending worship, our nursery is a safe nurturing environment where our youngest children (age 3 and under) can explore and learn, with a certified caring child care provider with over 10 years experience in early childhood education ensuring they are well provided for. While all children, even the youngest, are welcome to attend our services, the nursery is available to provide an option for parents who prefer not to have their youngest ones sit through an entire service. Children in the nursery can be "reclaimed" to be part of the communion, if desired.
Children's Formation for Children Pre-K to 5th Grade (Sunday School)
The Christian formation of our children involves classroom formation, communal worship, and the guidance, influence, and support of parents and loved ones. It is through these relationships, and their presence at St. Matthias, that children are encouraged to seek and know the love of God. In Sunday School classes, a holy and safe environment is created where children listen, watch, learn, and experience the presence of Christ in their lives. Teachers are facilitators and guides in this exploration of the divine using multiple resources and methods of learning.
This year we will be using a curriculum from The Thoughtful Christian entitled Feasting on the Word. This is a lectionary-based, multi-age curriculum covering grades K-5th grade. The curriculum is designed to encourage cooperative learning across a wide age range. Children will experience Scripture through storytelling, drama, and activities that appeal to various learning styles.
All Christian formation classes for children, Pre-K to grade 5, meet on Sunday mornings beginning at 9:45am and ending by 10:45 am in order to allow the children to join their parents for communion. Classes are held downstairs in the Parish Hall.
The Saint Matthias Youth Group is for all of our youth in 6th - 12th grade. Our goal is deepen our youths relationships with Christ as well as have fun and fellowship along the way! We meet most Sundays from 4-5:30pm during the school year. We also host activities outside of church such as hiking, mini-golf, skiing, and outreach or service activities in our local community. Our group attends the youth diocesan retreat twice per year at Frontier Ranch, in Buena Vista, Colorado, which is a blast! Our youth and their friends are always welcome!

Quest Youth Retreat registration is now open. Fall Quest will be October 25-27, 2019. This year the theme is #blessed. What does it mean to be blessed? How do we take back the sacredness of the word blessed and explore what it means to receive God’s blessing and carry it into the world to give to others? You can access the registration online at https://episcopalcoregister.campbrainregistration.com.
Safeguarding God’s Children
Keeping our children safe is of the utmost importance to St. Matthias and the Episcopal Church. Anyone involved in ministry with children or youth, as well as all clergy and wardens, is required to go through the Episcopal Church’s “Safeguarding God’s Children” training course. This must be renewed every four years. (If you’d like to learn more about this, please contact Rev. Laura.)
