Outreach

St. Matthias offers various opportunities to serve the local community by investing our time, talents, and resources to enhance the Kingdom of God in the Tri-Lakes region. One way we live out our faith in Christ is through acts of service. "You pray for the hungry. Then you feed them. That's how prayer works." the old saying goes. Here is a list of the various ways you can get involved to put hands and feet to your faith through St. Matthias Episcopal Church.

Lord’s Dinner:   St. Matthias volunteers serve a dinner three times a year to about 125 people at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, near Old Colorado City.  These are guests passing through town, guests that maybe live in a tent or guests with low incomes who can use a good hot meal.  In addition to providing and serving the meal, we provide toiletries, warm clothing and a wonderful evening of fellowship with our guests.  Sign-ups to help are normally posted about a month ahead.

RAD:  Real Alternative to Drinking and Drugs.  This is a program held at the local YMCA every Friday evening for local high school students. It is to give the students a safe place to spend their Friday evenings having fun.    We provide snacks and drinks for the evening, assist in checking students into the event, and serve as chaperones for the evening.  A group of students (RAD leadership) plan the activities for the evening.

Tri-Lakes Cares:   Weekly, we collect food at the church for the Tri-Lakes Cares Food Bank.  At Christmas time, we donate gifts for the children of Tri-Lakes Cares’ clients, and at the beginning of the school year we donate school supplies and backpacks for these children.

Empty Bowl Event:  This is a large yearly event to raise money for Tri-Lakes Cares.  It is put on at the local high school, with hand-made bowls made by local potters.  Soups, breads, and beverages are donated by local businesses and local churches provide the desserts.  Every year, St. Matthias volunteers donate desserts.

Feed My Starving Children:  Several times a year, a group of St. Matthias volunteers attend this event and pack very nutritious meals that are sent to children all over the world by this international non-profit.
