Chalice Bearers (aka Altar Lay Eucharistic Ministers)

Lay Readers

The ministry of Lay Reading is that of reading the Holy Scriptures during public worship. Lay Readers read so that the Word of God can be easily heard and comprehended.

Lay Readers at St. Matthias also lead the congregation in reading the appointed Psalm and leading the congregation in the Prayers of the People.

If you are interested in being trained as a Lay Reader, please contact Fr. Scott, our Rector at padrescott@gmail.com or by calling the church office.

Appointed Lessons for use on Sundays and Holy Days

The Episcopal Church uses a lectionary, or thought-out order for reading lessons for each Sunday and Holy Day in the Christian year. There are two authorized lectionaries for use in the Episcopal Church, the Common Lectionary of the Book of Common Prayer (BCP) and the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL).

St. Matthias uses the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL).

St. Matthias uses the New Revised Standard Version translation of the Holy Scriptures for all our worship services. The full text in this and other translations can be found at The Bible Gateway or at Bible.org.

Each lectionary can be found by clicking here. Choose "RCL" on the Sunday for readings (in the NRSV translation).

ArkALMIGHTY Outreach

On the First Sunday of Advent 2007, St. Matthias began using a new lectionary (new table of lessons for the Church year). Approved at the 2006 General Convention, the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL) provides some advantages over the lectionary listed in the Prayer Book:

  1. Ties our lessons with those of most Christian denomination in the world
  2. Provides semi-continuous readings from the Old Testament on the Sundays following Pentecost, providing new preaching and reflection opportunities
  3. Includes more of the women who are part of God’s action in sharing the Gospel and His nature with the world

And, more than 90% of the Gospel readings we are familiar with are still read on Sundays.
